SALTO Systems for Smarter Controlled Access

A lost mechanical key can create a security issue long after the person who lost it has left the building. Re-keying doors, tracing keyholders and restoring confidence in access control takes time and expense. SALTO systems replace that uncertainty with intelligent, auditable access management designed for organisations that need to control people, assets and premises without adding unnecessary administrative work.

For commercial, industrial and high-value environments, access control is no longer simply about locking a door. It is about knowing who can enter, where they can go, when their permission applies and how quickly that permission can be changed. SALTO provides a flexible platform for doing this across single buildings, distributed estates and complex multi-site operations.

What SALTO Systems Bring to Physical Security

SALTO access control combines electronic locking hardware, credentials and management software into a connected security infrastructure. Doors can be secured using RFID cards, fobs, PIN codes, mobile credentials or, where appropriate, biometric technologies. Permissions are assigned according to a person’s role, location, shift pattern or approved access requirements.

The practical advantage is immediate. If an employee changes role, a contractor completes their work or a credential is lost, access rights can be amended or removed without collecting keys from every holder or replacing cylinders throughout the building. Security teams retain control while facilities and operations teams spend less time administering physical keys.

This is particularly valuable where access requirements change regularly. Manufacturing sites may need to separate production, maintenance and hazardous areas. Offices may require different access for staff, visitors, cleaners and out-of-hours contractors. Healthcare, education, logistics and finance environments often need clear evidence of who accessed sensitive areas and when.

SALTO systems support these operational needs without forcing every site into the same configuration. The right design depends on the building fabric, user numbers, door types, existing security measures, resilience requirements and whether access needs to be managed locally, centrally or through the cloud.

Choosing the Right SALTO Access Architecture

SALTO offers several technology approaches, and the best option depends on the site rather than a single product preference. A detailed survey is essential because a door that appears straightforward may have fire-rating, escape, heritage, weather exposure or specialist locking requirements that affect the design.

SALTO Virtual Network

SALTO Virtual Network, often known as SVN, allows access data to be carried securely by user credentials between doors and the management platform. It is suited to organisations that require electronic access control across many doors but do not need every door permanently online.

This approach can reduce cabling requirements and is useful for buildings where running new infrastructure would be disruptive or costly. It still gives administrators control over permissions and provides an audit trail, although updates and events are transferred when credentials are presented at designated update points or doors.

SALTO Wireless and Wired Online Access

For doors that require more immediate communication, wireless and wired online solutions provide live connectivity. This is often appropriate for main entrances, server rooms, high-value stores, restricted operational areas and other doors where real-time status and rapid permission changes matter most.

Online access control can support immediate lockdown procedures, instant credential cancellation and up-to-date monitoring of selected openings. It may require more network planning, power provision and coordination with IT teams, but the additional control can be justified where risk is higher or operational response times are critical.

SALTO KS Cloud Management

SALTO KS is a cloud-based access control platform built for organisations that need central visibility and remote management without maintaining local access-control servers. It can be a strong fit for multi-site businesses, managed properties, flexible workplaces and organisations with limited on-site IT resource.

Authorised administrators can manage users, permissions and access schedules from a secure web-based platform. This makes it easier to maintain consistent access rules across locations while allowing local teams to handle day-to-day responsibilities where needed. Cloud management does not remove the need for a considered security policy - it makes that policy easier to apply and evidence.

Mobile Credentials Reduce Friction, Not Control

People increasingly expect to use their smartphone for workplace services. Mobile access credentials allow authorised users to open compatible doors using a managed digital credential, reducing reliance on physical cards and fobs.

For the business, this can improve the onboarding process. A new starter’s access can be issued before their first day, while temporary staff and visitors can receive time-limited permissions where the system design supports it. When access is no longer required, the credential can be withdrawn without waiting for a card to be returned.

Mobile credentials are not automatically the right choice for every workforce. Some environments have restrictions on personal devices, poor mobile coverage, glove-wearing operatives or users who require a simple physical credential. A well-designed SALTO system can accommodate a mixed credential strategy, allowing organisations to choose what is practical for each user group rather than imposing one method across the estate.

Why Door Hardware and Installation Matter

Access control performance depends as much on the door and lock as it does on the software. Incorrectly specified hardware can compromise door operation, fire safety, escape compliance and long-term reliability. It can also leave a sophisticated management platform attached to a door that does not provide the physical resistance the risk profile demands.

Every opening should be assessed as a complete assembly. That includes the door construction, frame condition, locking point, handle arrangement, fire rating, emergency egress, usage volume, external exposure and interaction with alarms or CCTV. Steel security doors, escape doors, glazed partitions, timber office doors and roller shutters each require different thinking.

This is where specialist locksmith capability and electronic access expertise should work together. The aim is not merely to fit a reader or electronic escutcheon. It is to deliver a reliable opening that secures correctly, operates safely and remains maintainable over its service life.

Integrating SALTO With Wider Site Operations

Access events become more useful when considered alongside the rest of a site’s security infrastructure. A door alarm can prompt a CCTV operator to review live or recorded video. Visitor management can ensure temporary credentials are issued only to approved guests. Smart lockers can provide controlled storage for devices, tools or personal belongings. Key management systems can record the issue and return of mechanical keys that must remain in circulation.

Integration should be driven by operational outcomes, not by technology for its own sake. A high-security archive may need access records, video verification and alarm response. A busy staff entrance may prioritise fast throughput and reliable user experience. A remote industrial site may need resilient offline operation alongside remotely managed permissions.

The strongest designs establish clear rules for normal operation, exceptions and incidents. They identify who administers access, who approves access requests, how contractors are managed, how leavers are removed and what happens if connectivity is interrupted. These decisions protect the investment long after installation day.

Planning for Scale, Support and Auditability

A system that works well for 50 users should not need replacing when the organisation reaches 500. SALTO is designed to scale, but scalability should be planned from the outset. Consider future buildings, additional departments, new access zones, changing shift patterns and whether the organisation may later want to introduce mobile credentials, visitor workflows or cloud administration.

Auditability is equally important. Access records can help investigate incidents, demonstrate compliance and identify permissions that no longer reflect operational need. However, records only have value when responsibility is clear. Regular access reviews should be part of the security process, particularly for sensitive zones and temporary users.

Ongoing support also deserves attention during procurement. Hardware will require maintenance, doors may be altered and user needs will change. A provider that can design the system, install it correctly, commission it, support the hardware and respond nationally offers useful continuity, especially across complex estates. Loktec Security Group applies this end-to-end approach to SALTO projects, combining technical system design with specialist engineering, locksmith knowledge and ongoing service support.

The most effective access control does not make the building harder to use. It gives authorised people the access they need, removes it when circumstances change and provides security teams with dependable evidence and control. That is the practical value of a well-planned SALTO system: better protection for the site, with less reliance on the keyring.
