How Salto KS Streamlines Vehicle Access with License Plate Recognition
Salto KS is extending smart access beyond the building entrance. With License Plate Recognition, authorised vehicles can now use their registration plate as a secure digital credential, creating a faster and more seamless way to manage vehicle and parking access.
As buildings become increasingly connected, organisations are looking beyond traditional door access and considering the complete journey of employees, residents, visitors and contractors.
Vehicle access is often still managed separately using remote controls, access cards, key fobs, intercoms or manual processes. This can create additional administration while making the arrival experience less convenient for users.
Salto KS License Plate Recognition (LPR), integrated with AVUTEC ANPR camera technology, provides a smarter alternative.
By allowing a vehicle registration number to operate as an access credential, authorised vehicles can be automatically recognised and granted access through compatible gates and parking barriers.
Extending Salto KS from doors to vehicles
Salto KS is a cloud-based access control platform designed to make managing access simple, flexible and scalable.
License Plate Recognition extends this capability beyond pedestrian doors and into vehicle access, helping organisations create a more unified approach to site security.
Available with Salto KS Pro, the solution combines Salto's cloud-based access management with AVUTEC's Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
Instead of presenting a card, opening an app or entering a PIN, the driver's registered number plate becomes their credential.
As an authorised vehicle approaches the barrier, its registration is recognised and checked against the access permissions held within Salto KS. If the vehicle is authorised, access can be granted automatically.
How does Salto KS License Plate Recognition work?
The solution brings together three key technologies:

Salto KS – the cloud-based platform used to manage users, credentials and access permissions.

AVUTEC ANPR cameras – used to identify vehicle registration plates as vehicles approach the access point.

Salto BlueConn – providing secure communication between the ANPR camera and the Salto KS environment.
The parking barrier or vehicle access point is configured within Salto KS using the appropriate Salto hardware, including a BLUEnet Door Controller, Wall Reader and Salto IQ connection.
Each AVUTEC camera is associated with a specific barrier, enabling Salto KS to determine exactly which access point a vehicle is attempting to enter.
What happens when a vehicle arrives?
The process is designed to be fast and automatic:

The AVUTEC ANPR camera detects the approaching vehicle and reads its registration plate.

The registration information and relevant barrier ID are communicated to Salto KS.

Salto KS checks whether the registration is assigned to an authorised user with the appropriate access rights.

If access is permitted, the barrier opens automatically.

If the vehicle does not have the required permission, access is denied.
For the driver, the entire process can happen without presenting another credential or interacting with an access device.
Your registration plate becomes a Salto KS credential
One of the major advantages of the integration is that vehicle registrations can be managed alongside other Salto KS credentials.
A vehicle registration can be assigned to an individual user and governed by the same access groups and permissions used elsewhere across the site.
This means administrators can centrally control who is permitted to enter particular vehicle access points and ensure vehicle permissions remain aligned with the user's wider access rights.
Each registration plate is unique within the system and can only be assigned to one user, while individual users can have multiple registration plates where required.
For organisations already using Salto KS, this creates a much more integrated approach than operating a completely separate vehicle access system.

The cameras combine advanced imaging, recognition technology and edge processing to accurately identify approaching vehicles and communicate with Salto KS.
Correct camera positioning is an important part of any ANPR installation. Cameras will typically be positioned several metres from the barrier and facing approaching vehicles to provide a clear view of the registration plate.
Network connectivity is also required, with Power over Ethernet (PoE) providing a practical option for compatible installations.
Loktec can assess the wider vehicle access requirements of a site and determine how the solution can be incorporated into the overall Salto access control infrastructure.
Resilience during connectivity interruptions
An important consideration for cloud-connected vehicle access is what happens if internet connectivity is temporarily lost.
The Salto KS and AVUTEC solution provides an offline access capability. AVUTEC cameras can periodically maintain a local list of authorised vehicle registrations, allowing access decisions to continue during certain connectivity interruptions.
This helps provide greater continuity for critical vehicle entrances and parking areas.

Craniosynostosis Awareness Month: Nancy’s Story
September is Craniosynostosis Awareness Month, and at Loktec we are helping to raise awareness by sharing the remarkable story of a very special little girl: Nancy.
Nancy is part of the wider Loktec family and has shown more courage and resilience than anyone should ever need at such a young age. During the summer, she spent five weeks in hospital and underwent six heartbreaking operations at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Behind Nancy throughout this incredibly difficult journey have been her devoted parents, Bethany and Niall, and her loving older sister, Maya. Their strength, love and determination have been extraordinary.
What is craniosynostosis?
Craniosynostosis is a rare condition in which one or more of the joints between the bones of a baby’s skull fuse too early. These joints, known as sutures, would normally remain flexible while the brain and skull grow.
When a suture closes prematurely, it can affect the way the skull develops and cause a baby’s head to have an unusual shape. In some cases, it may also restrict the space available for the growing brain.
There are several different forms of the condition. Nancy was diagnosed with a severe case of sagittal craniosynostosis, which affects the suture running from the front to the back of the skull. It commonly causes the head to grow longer and narrower than usual.
Nancy’s diagnosis
Nancy’s craniosynostosis journey began shortly before her first birthday.
Her head measured on the 98th percentile while her body was on the 23rd percentile. Her family had also noticed an unusual head shape and that she was falling over frequently. These concerns prompted them to seek further medical assessment.
Nancy was subsequently diagnosed with severe sagittal craniosynostosis and referred to the specialist craniofacial team at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The diagnosis was overwhelming for the whole family. Before Nancy’s experience, craniosynostosis was a condition they had never heard of—something they have since discovered is true for many other people.
Five weeks and six operations
What followed was an extraordinarily difficult period for Nancy and everyone who loves her.
During five weeks in hospital, Nancy underwent six operations. No family expects to watch their little girl face major surgery, let alone endure operation after operation in such a short time.
Throughout it all, Nancy displayed incredible bravery. Her strength, determination and beautiful personality continued to shine through, even during the most challenging moments.
Bethany and Niall remained constantly by her side, providing all the love, comfort and reassurance she needed. Maya also showed tremendous love and courage while her little sister received treatment away from home.
We are incredibly proud of every one of them.
Why early recognition matters
Nancy’s family believe that, had the condition been identified earlier, her treatment journey might have been very different. This is why Bethany is determined to share Nancy’s story and help other parents become more aware of the possible signs.
Babies’ heads naturally come in many different shapes and sizes, and an unusual shape does not necessarily mean that a child has craniosynostosis. However, the NHS advises parents to speak to a GP if they are concerned about the shape, size or development of their child’s head.
Possible signs can include:

A head that appears unusually long and narrow

A forehead that looks pointed or triangular
-
Flattening or bulging on one side of the head
-
A soft spot on the top of the head that disappears before the age of one

A noticeable ridge along the skull
-
Head growth that appears out of proportion with the child’s body
Parents know their children better than anyone. If something does not seem right, it is important that their concerns are heard and properly assessed.

After everything she has experienced, we are delighted to say that Nancy is now doing very well.
Her recovery is a testament to her remarkable courage, the unwavering support of Bethany, Niall and Maya, and the exceptional care provided by the specialists, surgeons, nurses and support teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Nancy’s journey has touched everyone at Loktec. By sharing her story, we hope to help more people recognise the name craniosynostosis, understand the potential signs and appreciate why early diagnosis can be so important.
